15 Lessons I've Learned in Sobriety

1) There is nothing scary about it, the idea of staying the same (or getting worse) is SO much scarier. 2) You don’t lose anyone who is meant to stay in your life.

3) It feels like coming home. 4) You can still go out and do fun things but what you determine as “fun” may look different than it used to. And that is okay.

5) It is a gift to no longer force a darn thing. Friendships, relationships, small talk. If it doesn’t align, it isn’t mine. Keep moving.

6) We make it harder than it actually is (because of our beliefs in ourselves). Don’t hate me for that one.

7) Internal validation is the only validation we need. Repeat as many times as necessary.

8) You will still make friends in the bathroom at concerts and events, that is still totally a thing.

9) You don’t lose anything, but you do gain everything.

10) Life is still challenging, but you are better able to respond to it. If you have this idea that sobriety is sunshine, lollipops and rainbows - we will need to talk about that. Envision an “expectation vs. reality” kind of dialogue. It is worlds better, but life is still going to be lifey. I think it is important to note that.

11) When it comes to fear of judgement, we are usually the worst voice in our head. It really doesn’t matter what other people think anyways. The sooner you embrace that, the better you’ll feel.

12) Self doubt will still show up, you are still human. But now you believe you can do hard things, and that confidence is nice to keep in the back pocket for EVERYTHING.

13) Life goes on without alcohol. Contrary to popular belief and stigma.

14) Alcohol is NOT the elixir of life. It is NOT the glue that holds things together. In fact, if you look closely, you’ll probably see that it is the root cause of most of the problems in your life.

15) Alcohol is not a solution and it does not fix anything. The solution is removing alcohol. Will life suddenly be perfect? No. But will it get better? Absolutely yes.
